Amadeus by Peter Shaffer
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a genius, a prodigy whose music has become immortal; Antonio Salieri a mediocrity, a man whose memory will scarcely outlive him.
The setting is Vienna, in November 1823. On the final night of his life, Salieri takes us back forty years, to the opulence and pomp of the court of the Austrian Emperor, Joseph II. Salieri is a successful and popular composer, who has dedicated his life to God and to music. Yet the arrival of Mozart – young, brash, foul-mouthed and vulgar – is to shake Salieri’s life and convictions to the point where he will seek to destroy his hated upstart rival and wage a personal war on God himself.
Shaffer’s iconic drama is one of the best-loved British dramas of the late 20th century.
