Museum Lecture Evening: Flying the Hawker Hunter Fighter by Rod Dean
Society of Friends Fleet Air Arm Museum Lecture: Popular former RAF display pilot Rod Dean talks about Flying the Hunter during the Cold War years. This will take place in Hall 1's Auditorium. Non-members welcome. Refreshments available for a donation. Card payments accepted.
The Hawker Hunter, along with the Supermarine Swift, was the first move into a swept wing fighter for the Royal Air Force. Whilst it eventually matured into a first class fighter and ground-attack aircraft it did suffer from many early difficulties such as shortage of fuel, inability to fire the guns without major engine problems (Avon engine aircraft) and handling difficulties, particularly at high level.
Fortunately, as opposed to the Swift, the Hunter’s underlying design was sound and capable of being modified and these problems were each overcome in turn. My talk on the Hunter tracks all these problems and the moves Hawkers made to rectify them.
Rod’s own personal experiences in flying the Hunter operationally will no doubt come out in this talk. This will be an in-depth analysis of this fine Hawker offering.
