A well-known writer, broadcaster, historian and war reporter, Paul knew Eric ”Winkle” Brown for many years. On the eminent aviator’s 90th birthday, he offered to write his biography. Eric agreed but not until after his death. Paul was subsequently given access to Eric’s archive and his book is the result. There are some very surprising revelations about his subject, even down to the day that Eric was born. Eric famously met Hanna Reitsch and Ernst Udet on a visit to Germany in his teenage years, this sowed the seeds for flight.
At the outbreak of War, the waiting lists for the RAF were full, so Eric applied to the RN as a pilot. He soon progressed to advanced fighter training and qualified on the Grumman Martlet and 802 NAS. So was the beginning of an extremely eventful career which anyone interested in aviation will know some anecdotes about this famous aviator. But this talk will surprise and amaze our audience as new facts are revealed about one of the worlds most famous aviators. Paul will not be glossing over Eric’s difficult personality either as we delve into this most complex person.
